Saskia Huning is a painter specialising in recreating and restoring historic painted decoration. Her work includes projects for English Heritage, the National Trust and numerous churches and private houses around the country.
When not working on site Saskia carries on painting directly onto the walls throughout her Barclay Road house, using it as the canvas for contemporary wall paintings. Colourful abstract and repeating patterns run from the hallway up the stairs and into the bedroom.
This year Saskia has developed a number of printed fabrics from her colourful abstract paintings, creating an interesting family of designs in small and large scale for use as curtains, bedspreads and cushions. These add to the dense patterning and colour that runs throughout her house.
The dining room has her recreation of Fred Millett's mural 'Winter' the original of which was painted in 1953 in St Crispin's school Wokingham. The 'Winter' mural was painted as one of a set of three paintings, Summer, Autumn and Winter, all three being painted when the school was built. The murals were painted over in the 70's when a new headmaster took over and after much fundraising the Summer and Autumn paintings were uncovered. As the Winter mural would have suffered too much damage on uncovering it was decided that it should be recreated. Saskia completed this mural over the summer of 2013 and as part of the sampling of the project created an initial mural at Barclay Road. Saskia Huning March 2015
