Culture, rebellion and graffiti
72 Salop Road
This venue has level access.
Rolando Gomez Aguilar is a social anthropologist who has worked with indigenous and rural communities across Chiapas, Mexico - a state with a strong tradition of resistance and rebellion against successive corrupt and oppressive governments. Rolando has a particular interest in visual anthropology and his latest project captures the graffiti of his home town, San Cristobal de las Casas, which has developed in recent years to encompass gang culture, political slogans, detailed satirical artworks and colourful reflections on Mexican culture. This collection of photographs provides an insight into this important subculture of a country in which systemic violence, corruption and injustice have become the norm.
